The solitude found in quiet meditative contour drawing is Jean's entry into creative sessions in her studio. Though graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts with concentration in printmaking and ceramics, drawing was Jean's reentry into the world of art after a long hiatus of rearing children.
"As I returned to the creative process in the early 1980's I came to realize that it was the act of working that was most satisfying and was a connection to the spiritual," she says. "Working through the creative process is akin to a journey. There is something in this process that connects us to a basic inner longing and to the giver of all creativity. The finished product is a joy-filled side benefit. It is the rhythm of solitude - of creation, of nature and of life experiences - that motivates my work and that I hope finds expression in the finished product."
Currently Jean pursues art full-time by creating one of a kind hand-pulled fine art prints called monotypes. This process involves painting on a "plate" or surface that will not absorb the color and then transferring the image by hand to paper. This medium allows for a great deal of experimentation that encourages Jean's intuitive way of working. The addition of another printing technique to the "monotype" results in a "monoprint" - still a one of a kind print. Jean is currently experimenting with the addition of linoleum cuts to the printed monotype images in an effort to incorporate her love of contour line into her monotypes.
