Seeking a place where God and nature abounded, West Virginia called Jim to the mountains. Immediately, he felt like he belonged. He had come home. The people were gentle and caring, quick to encourage Jim to follow his dream.
Frustration with mass-produced items, an innate desire to be unique and creative, and a respect for life in all stages of its journey, led to the creation of "Potterwood." Surrounded by trees, enjoying the music of the many birds that share his haven, Jim's love of nature and the beauty in it, make him feel at peace using stoneware and porcelain clay to create the visions inspired by his imagination. His rules are simple. Work at his own pace and create an item of beauty, whether functional or whimsical, but never to fear a challenge.
Jim's day in the shop begins with a cup of tea, a prayer of thanks, and request for guidance. Each piece of pottery is hand thrown, numbered and signed before being bisque fired. It is then glazed with Jim's own formulas, which he feels reflect his passion for art and beauty. Decorating ranges from plain and simple to complex before the pot is fired again. Whether a teapot, casserole, crock, cup, or artistic form, each piece is "one of a kind," reflecting its diversity by composition.
Urns are Jim's specialty and each is designed to reflect as unique a character as the individual memories it will hold.
At the end of each day, Jim believes every piece of pottery thrown is both an answer and a tribute.
"May the peace and goodwill with which each handcrafted piece is made, fill your heart and your home."
