I have always loved to make things... drawings, paintings, clay, fabric, wood, whatever, I always loved to have my hands in something and when I was done - see a result. I started sewing when I was about 10 years old. I would take things apart, and turn them inside out, just to see how they were constructed. Then I would take that information and build my own.
Puzzles and brainteasers are another interest of mine. Taking the pieces of something and reconstructing it... fun. As an adult this translates into a BFA in Art and Design. In my professional life, I am a graphic designer. I approach every project as a puzzle with all its various elements needing to be brought together in some coherent and attractive unified piece.
Making dolls is my reward for finishing everything else a normal day requires. It is my time to get my hands involved with something real that isn’t attached to a computer! It has no value, other than making me happy. Therefore, I call my creations Fripperies. I found frippery in a thesaurus, where amongst other definitions were, showy, frivolous, and nonessential. It fits perfectly.
Fripperies may be found at Rocky Gap Lodge, 60 N. Centre Gallery, and online at www.fripperies.net.
