Carnahan, Allen

As an artist, I prefer to do portraits. I want my work to catch your attention. My goal is to get a good likeness that reflects the subject’s personality. My current work is primarily in oils, but I also use pastels and watercolors. My style reflects my study of the “Old Masters” and various instructors I have worked with along the way.

Drawing was my favorite diversion as a kid. One summer I supported myself at Ocean City by drawing pastel caricatures on the boardwalk. I drew enough each day to earn the money for a pizza and my room rent. What more can a kid need at the beach?

I set my art aside to earn a living as many of us do. I picked it up again as my children began leaving the nest. At first my medium was metal work. I worked as an artistic blacksmith and blade smith for a number of years. A few years before I retired I picked up my painting again using watercolor.

After retiring in 2002, I again explored watercolors, pastels and oils. I paint still life and landscape, but my favorite subject is the human face. In order to get the practice needed to improve my work, I helped organize the Portrait Study Group that meets every 1st and 3rd Wednesday at the 60 North Centre Street Gallery. Members of the community have very graciously posed for us giving several very serious artists the opportunity to practice with a live model regularly.

I am a member of the Allegany Arts Council, the Allegany Area Art Alliance and the Western Maryland Water Color Society, both in the Cumberland Maryland Area.

My work has been displayed at the Saville Gallery, 60 North Centre Street Gallery and Rocky Gap Resort.
