Stephen Manger Exhibition

10/21/2010-11/19/2010
Stephen F. Manger was raised in Western Maryland, and he currently resides and works in Frostburg. According to Stephen, "Mistakes are more interesting than intentions. If I had to describe my process of making art it would be the management of errors. I make mistakes on purpose. Thousands of them. I choose the most useful mistakes, catalog them, and try to repeat them, often. I allow the process to do the work - finding new forms, applications and effects so that the resulting picture is the product of continual editing, collecting and combining. I work to amass an ever-increasing collection of techniques. I strive to remove evidence of my own hand in the art. Sometimes I allow gravity to do the work, rather than the brush. I do not make images of things. The images themselves are organic and amorphic, and are not meant to represent anything, although ultimately that decision is not left to me."

An Opening Reception for this exhibition will be held in the Allegany Arts Council's Saville Gallery on Saturday, October 23, from 5-8PM, in conjunction with the Arts Walk in Downtown Cumberland. The Saville Gallery is located at 9 North Centre Street in Downtown Cumberland's Arts & Entertainment District. For questions, please call 301-777-ARTS (2787).
