This seventh annual juried exhibition and art competition is sponsored by the Allegany Arts Council, a non-profit organization that was established in 1975 to support and grow the arts in our community. Western Maryland is the ideal setting for a plein air event! Allegany and Garrett Counties are filled with magnificent mountain vistas, pristine state forests and parks, historic architecture, an abundance of small-town charm and a variety of other visual attractions, like the C&O Canal, the Casselman Bridge, the Potomac River, numerous streams throughout both counties, a variety of industrial settings, and the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad.
Only thirty artists will be accepted to participate, and over $10,000 in prize money will be awarded.
Applicants are asked to submit 3 digital images of their plein air artwork, a photo, and a brief bio. The entry fee is $40. All applications must be submitted by midnight (Mountain Standard Time) on Sunday, February 15, 2015. Allegany Arts Council will not accept applications directly. If you have participated previously, some of the rules have changed.
Accepted artists will be responsible for their own lodging during the event. However, a number of community members have agreed to host participating artists and in past years we have been able to accommodate all artists interested in finding housing.
A 40% commission on all artwork sold during the Mountain Maryland Plein Air event will be retained by Allegany Arts Council, with all sales handled by representatives of the Saville Gallery. During the course of the Saville Gallery exhibition, artwork will be insured for 60% of its retail value.
Phase 1: Artists interested in being featured in the Plein Air Exhibition in June need to apply and be pre-screened through CaFE in order to be included in the Mountain Maryland Plein Air Exhibition. During this initial review, our Juror, Stewart White, will evaluate the submitted images (these images must be examples of your actual Plein Air artwork) to determine if the artist will be invited to participate in the exhibition. 30 artists will be selected based on the plein air images they submit. All artists who apply will receive electronic notification of the results of the screening process. Notification will be sent to the email address supplied when applying through CaFE.
Phase 2: The Artists identified by the screening committee will be featured in a short exhibition, the week of the event, designed to educate and promote the artists and provide another opportunity to show and sell work. These works will be selected by the artists. During Plein Air week a number of optional events are planned. Accepted artists will receive further details on these opportunities. All artists will be encouraged to participate in the quick draw event. There is no charge to register, but artists must pre-register for the event and have their canvas or board stamped.
Stewart White, of Baltimore, Maryland, is a leading American plein air painter and a familiar face at painting events across the United States and abroad. He is a member of the American Impressionists Society (AIS), signature member of the National Watercolor Society (NWS), signature member of The American Watercolor Society (AWS), past President of The American Society of Architectural Illustrators (ASAI) and president of the Mid-Atlantic Plein-Air Painters Association (MAPAPA). Mr. White recently won the top award of $15,000 at the national Plein Air Convention and his winning painting, St. John's Church, Richmond, is featured on the cover of the July 2014 issue of Plein Air magazine."
