Susan DeVan Exhibition
Frostburg Museum
Susan DeVan 07/10/2012-08/04/2012
The Frostburg Museum is proud to present an exhibition “Art and Soul”, Paintings by Susan DeVan beginning July 10 continuing through August 4. The artist’s reception will be held on July 14 from 5-8PM, which is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served and everyone is invited to come to meet and talk with the artist.

Susan DeVan has been oil painting since the age of nine in her hometown of Washington, DC. Her only formal training was from a high school art teacher, but during that time she won several city-wide poster contests. After studying Foreign Service at Georgetown University, she held jobs as Geographer, Defense Intelligence Analyst, and Office Manager for an international Association. Over the years she continued to paint as time allowed, and had some success exhibiting and selling in small galleries in Fairfax, Virginia while raising a family.

Susan has won awards for creative writing and oil painting since retiring to Hampshire County, WV, where she and her husband Richard pursue their creative interests. Both have won awards for writing, either nationally or statewide.

There were several guides Susan followed in the development of her artistic style: 1) always remember where the light source is; 2) paint the atmosphere between the viewer and the subject; 3) texture is important; 4) use a spare palette; 5) in art galleries, study the techniques of great artists in detail, up as close as the guards will let you; 6) paint scenes and people as you see their beauty subjectively, and try to transmit that vision to the viewer of the painting; 7) finally, paint that which evokes an emotional response in you. This is why the exhibit is entitled “Art and Soul.”

The Frostburg Museum is a non-profit organization located at the corners of Hill and Oak Streets in the growing arts and entertainment district of Frostburg, Maryland. The Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 12-5PM, the artist’s work will be available for viewing during that time and admittance to the Museum is always free. Your generous donations are always appreciated. For more information you are welcome to contact Garry Ritchie, curator, at 301-689-1195 or by email at frostburgmuseum@verizon.net.
