Plans for the 10th Annual Mountain Maryland Plein Air are underway!  Save the dates of September 24-29, 2018!

What is the Plein Air Competition?

This national, juried exhibition and art competition is sponsored by the Allegany Arts Council, and is celebrating its 10th Anniversary in 2018!

Plein air painting, originally begun by French impressionists, is the concept of painting in "open air."  The theory behind this type of approach is to challenge artists to leave the comfort of their studios and paint their surroundings.  In Western Maryland, we are lucky to have magnificent mountain vistas, pristine state forests and parks, historic architecture, an abundance of small-town charm and a variety of other visual attractions to form the basis of this artwork. Our destination is perfect for those artists who want to get away from it all and experience the beauty of the world around us.

Who Attends?

Each year, the Allegany Arts Council launches a national call to artists for this competition and only 30 artists are invited to participate.  The following artists have been invited to the 2018 competition:

Lissa Abrams - Baltimore, MD
Bruno Baran - Nottingham, MD

Who is the Juror?

Vladislav Yeliseyev, AIS, NWS

Vlad Yeliseyev is no stranger to beautiful scenery. In fact, he’s traveled around the world to paint interesting cityscapes and landscapes. But unlike many artists who are drawn to a postcard-perfect site, Yeliseyev usually can be found around the back of a building, along the street or in an alleyway, capturing commonplace scenes," wrote BJ Foreman in her article "Everyday Poetry" in the Watercolor Artist Magazine (Feb.2016).

The Russian émigré came to the Unites States in the 1980s equipped with a classical art education from Moscow School of Art and a Master’s Degree in architecture from the Moscow Institute of Architecture. Now a renowned watercolor and plein air artist, his paintings are in personal and commercial collections worldwide.

Yeliseyev is the founder of Renaissance School of Art in Sarasota, Florida, where he teaches the basics of visual art: perspective, lighting, shading and color.  After receiving many inquiries about his watercolor techniques, he released an instructional DVD -“Painting Architecture” - which is available for purchase at this site. His second video workshop - "Impressions in Watercolor" - was released in 2017 and is also available for purchase at the same link.

In his work as a plein air artist, Vladislav has participated in prestigious invitational paint-outs nationwide and abroad. He has won numerous awards including Best of Show, Collector’s Choice Award and The BoldBrush Award.

Vlad is an exhibiting member of many art societies nationwide, and a signature member of American Impressionist Society, National Watercolor Society, and Florida Watercolor Society.
