The Allegany Arts Council hosts its 5th Annual Allegany National Photography Competition and Exhibition (ANPCE) April 6-27, 2019. The exhibition melds the region’s rich concentration of photographic artists with an influx of national photographers.

Prizes

The juried show distributed $5,000 in prize money at the public opening on Saturday, April 6, including $1,500 for Best of Show.

Robin Dintiman captured Best in Show for Annadelle Oaks, which offered a glimpse of the recent wildfires in California with a shot of live oak trees before and after the fires. Other awards were as follows:

First Place Color: Teta on the Deck by Jillian MacMaster

Second Place Color: Quarries 10 by Raphael Warshaw

Third Place Color: Hampshire County Fair, 2018 by Edward DeWitt

First Place Monochrome: Selena Night by Cesar De La Cruz

Second Place Monochrome: Spooked by Kristina Butler

Third Place Monochrome: Untitled by Anastasia Davis

First Place Experimental: First Class Moving and Storage by Sara Drower

Second Place Experimental: Willamette Falls by Mark Eifert

Third Place Experimental: Persistence by Linda Agar-Hendrix

Juror

Dan Leers, Curator of Photography with the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh. PA, served as the 2019 ANCPE juror.  

Prior to joining Carnegie Museum of Art in May 2015, Leers was an independent curator in New York City and a curatorial advisor to the 2013 Venice Biennale. From 2007 to 2011, he served as the Beaumont and Nancy Newhall Curatorial Fellow in the department of photography at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. During his tenure at MoMA, Leers organized the exhibition New Photography 2011: Moyra Davey, George Georgiou, Deana Lawson, Doug Rickard, Viviane Sassen, Zhang Dali.

Leers graduated with a BA from Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin, and an MA from Columbia University. Since arriving in Pittsburgh, Leers has curated Strength in Numbers: Photography in Groups and William Henry Fox Talbot and the Promise of Photography.
