Every Tuesday afternoon, our office manager, Emily Thomas, sends out an Arts Flash email to all Allegany Arts Council members. The following day, it is posted to this web site for everyone's reference. The Arts Flash is basically a list of all the upcoming art-related events, activities, classes and opportunities that we're aware of throughout Allegany County (and beyond). As you'll see, there's lots of art happening in our community...so be sure to get out there and ENJOY!

2013 ART*STANDING ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Deadline: May 31, 2013
The Allegany Arts Council is pleased to invite nominations for the 2013 Art*standing Achievement Award. This award is presented annually to an individual who is “doing outstanding work as a volunteer for a local arts organization, and/or to an individual who is making a substantial contribution to the vitality of the local arts community in Allegany County.” Award nominations (consisting of a brief narrative of no more than 500 words) must be emailed to artstanding@allconet.org no later than midnight on Friday, May 31. A committee of three judges will review the nominations and select a winner who will be announced at our annual Membership Meeting & Picnic on June 13. The award winner will be recognized with a plaque and will be entitled to choose a local, non-profit organization to receive a $250 donation (made in honor of the award winner) from the Allegany Arts Council. BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP

ALLEGANY COMMUNITY SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
The Allegany Community Symphony Orchestra will present its 11th Annual Spring Concert on May 23 at 7PM in the Pealer Recital Hall (Performing Arts Center) on the Frostburg State University campus. The orchestra, directed by Pat Aaron and Lee Ann O'Brien, will include Beethoven's Egmont Overture as well as his Symphony No.7. Also to be performed is Carl Maria von Weber's Clarinet Concerto in D, featuring Kristin Loar, and selections from "Les Miserables." The concert is free and open to the public.

DELFEST
May 23 - 26, High Sierra Music presents the annual DelFest Bluegrass festival at the Allegany County Fairgrounds. The festival offers intimate playshops, kids’ area, arts & crafts fair, on-site camping, late night stage, VIP packages, campground stage, and the DelFest Academy. FOURTH FRIDAY TEA SOCIAL
On May 24 at 11AM, the Gordon-Roberts House hosts the presentation “Gardens” with Ginnie Decker and Charles Baker as part of the Fourth Friday Tea Socials, held the fourth Friday of each month. May 25 - June 15, the Frostburg Museum hosts an exhibition of metal work and sculpture by Kenny Braitman and Reeta Khindri. The public is invited to meet the artists and view their work at the opening reception on Saturday, May 25, from 5 - 8PM. The Frostburg Museum is a non-profit organization located at the corner of Hill and Oak Streets in Frostburg’s Arts and Entertainment District. SUNDAY IN THE PARK
The Allegany Arts Council kicks off the Sunday in the Park concert series at the Constitution Park Amphitheatre on May 26 from 7:30 - 9PM with a performance by the Potomac Concert Band. Audience members are invited to bring their lawn chairs and blankets for seating on the hillside. Some bench seating is available in front of the stage. WORLD ARTISTS EXPERIENCES
The next World Artists Experiences (WAE) concert will be held May 31 at 7PM at First Presbyterian Church, located at 11 Washington Street in Cumberland. Featured will be Gerdan: Kaleidoscope of World Music. Their music is diverse, energetic and charming, blending classical and authentic folk music with new melodic ideas and rhythms. The Gerdan concert program features contrasting musical styles in the musical traditions of Eastern Europe. Traditional songs along with classical compositions of Antonin Dvořák, George Gershwin get original arrangements in diverse and fascinating combinations of acoustic folk art instruments from Eastern Europe. Even though all musical groups presented by WAE are top quality and recommended by their embassies, all WAE concerts are FREE. WESTERN MD TRADITIONAL IRISH MUSIC OPEN SESSIONS
Interested in learning traditional Irish tunes in a fun session atmosphere? Join us in our monthly slow sessions at the Allegany Arts Council’s Community Room. We will teach and play from a set list of session tunes at a slower than normal pace so beginner and intermediate players can more easily learn the core tunes one at a time. More advanced players who want to learn session tunes are encouraged to attend as well. The next session of the year will meet from 1:30 - 3:30PM on May 26. HCAC ART CAMP
Deadline: June 1, 2013
“Adventures In The Arts: Hampshire County Arts Council Art Camp 2013” for 8 to 13-year-olds returns July 8 - 12 from 9AM - Noon daily. Download a registration form along with everything one needs to know to sign up. This camp is intended for youngsters with a real interest in the arts and will expose them to two different art forms each day, with a snack in between sessions. Registration is limited and due by June 1. The $35 fee will include all materials and a camp tee-shirt. There will be a few scholarships for any youngsters whose families can't swing the fee. Illustration is an area of art that is extremely diverse, offering artists many avenues to pursue including: children's book illustrating, editorials, commercial advertising, greeting cards, and so much more! Young artists will be able to release their creativity while learning a variety of new and experimental techniques with a variety of mediums including: paints, pencils and markers, clay, and more! Each lesson, students will create a work of art while learning basic to advanced levels of art terminology and color and design theories. Classes will end with students learning how to properly give critiques of other students artwork by providing constructive criticism and verbalizing terminology learned in class. Through these lessons, students will not only increase their artistic abilities, but will also improve problem solving, observation, communication, and critical thinking skills. Classes will consist of exercises and lessons that will strengthen one's ability to draw and paint realistically and accurately represent visual concepts. EVERGREEN ARTIST WORKSHOPS
The Evergreen Heritage Center Foundation is hosting a series of upcoming Artist Workshops with local artist Maggie Pratt. The final topic is “Evergreen Landscape” on June 16. Workshops meet from 1:30 - 4PM. Bring the beverage of your choice and spend an afternoon with Maggie and friends expressing your “inner artist”. Maggie will lead you through the creative process while you sip your favorite libation. DISCOVERY CAMPS AT EVERGREEN
The Evergreen Heritage Center is pleased to offer its 2013 summer Science Discovery Camp series, featuring “Safari Sleuths,” July 8 - 12, and “Garden Detectives,” July 15 - 19, both from 9AM - Noon. Camps provide educational, fun outdoor learning experiences for young people ages 8 - 12. Activities reinforce science concepts taught during the school year and engage students with hands-on fun and exploration. GOTTA SING, GOTTA DANCE
“Gotta Sing, Gotta Dance” is a fun musical theatre workshop for students entering grades 3 - 5 and grades 6 - 8. Students rotate between classes of singing, choreographed movement, visual arts, and acting. A free performance for the parents tops off the week. $175 includes art supplies and projects, music, t-shirt, and all classes. Camp size is limited to 60 students. MR. TOAD’S POTTERY
Mr. Toad's Pottery is a paint-your-own-pottery studio. People of all ages are welcome to stop in and create a one-of-kind memento to cherish for generations. Drawing classes are available Tuesdays from 9:30AM - 4PM at Cafe Mark's on Baltimore Street. Drawing instruction will include pencil types, pencil strokes with emphases on values and proportions. The Life Drawing Group meets at the Cumberland Theatre each Thursday from 7 - 9PM. The entrance is on the Fayette Street side of the building. All who are interested in keeping up their life drawing skills are welcome. The cost varies, depending on how many people show up for the class. WILL’S CREEK SURVEY: CALL FOR ENTRIES

The 14th Annual Will's Creek Survey is a juried exhibition of contemporary artwork that is open to visual artists from across the United States. The exhibition will be held in the Allegany Arts Council's Saville Gallery from September 7 - October 4, and over $5,000 in artist awards will be presented. This year's juror and awards judge will be Lauren Schell Dickens, the assistant curator of contemporary art at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. DONATIONS OF ARTWORK REQUESTED
The Western Maryland Health System (WMHS) Foundation is looking for visual artists to help support local cancer patients and their families by donating a piece of art to their Ribbons & Rhinestones silent auction on June 8. The 81st Annual Cumberland Valley Artists Exhibition is a juried art competition at the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts open to both professional and amateur artists. HERITAGE DAYS VENDORS
Vendors are invited to submit an application for space in the 45th Annual Heritage Days. There are a limited number of spaces available, so return your application immediately to insure consideration. Heritage Days strives to maintain variety and quality and reserves the right to limit the number of each type of craft/product. Heritage Days is the largest street festival within Allegany County, attracting nearly 12,000 people each year. The festival is held on the streets and sidewalks of the Washington Street Historic District. The festival is under management and leadership of the Heritage Days Festival Committee with the support of the Allegany County Convention & Visitor’s Bureau, the Allegany County Commissioners, and the City of Cumberland. SKETCHBOOK PROJECT
To celebrate the Maryland Federation of Arts 50th anniversary, MFA invites everyone to participate in our 50th Anniversary Sketchbook Project! Affiliated with the Sketchbook Project in Brooklyn, NY, the MFA project is a state-wide, non-juried art project where people from all walks of life, with all types of backgrounds create a collective installation, and share their artwork with thousands of people. The Somerset County Artists Association’s 26th Annual Juried Art Competition will be held at the Philip Dressler Center for the Arts, June 18 - July 21. 3RD ANNUAL TRI-STATE WING-OFF
On June 22 from Noon - 10PM, the Western Maryland Jaycees present the 3rd Annual Tri-State Wing-Off, featuring great fun, great bands and the best wings in the Tri-State area. The event is a benefit for Tri-State Community School for the Arts. This year, local businesses and artisans are invited to display and showcase or sell their products. The booth fee has been lowered to $50 and artists are welcome to share a space. A large crowd is expected because of the great entertainment. Last year we had nearly 1400 guests throughout the day with little advertisement. This year, the word is out and we have already printed 1000 tickets for presale and intend for more. 2014 BACKBONE MOUNTAIN REVIEW

The Backbone Mountain Review (BMR) is now accepting submissions for the 2014 edition. An annual literary journal produced by the Allegany Arts Council, the Frostburg Center for Creative Writing and the Allegany County Library System, the BMR is looking for regional writers of all skill levels who are interested in having their work published. The Allegany Arts Council would like to remind everyone that the next application deadline for grants from the Hadra Scholarship Fund is Monday, July 1 by 5PM. The Fund was established to provide small monetary grants to individuals residing in Allegany County who are in need of financial assistance to pursue an interest or an experience in the arts. The 2014 Maryland Individual Artist Award guidelines and application are now available. Applicants must be full-time Maryland residents. The funding categories for 2014 include: Classical Music: Composition, Classical Music: Solo Performance, Dance: Choreography, Dance: Solo Performance, Poetry, Visual Arts: Sculpture, World Music: Composition, World Music: Solo Performance.
