2024 Schoolhouse Quilt Show returns to Allegany County Fairgrounds June 21-23

CUMBERLAND— The Allegany Arts Council returns the 2024 Schoolhouse Quilt Show, June 21-23, 2024, at the Allegany County Fairgrounds in Cumberland. MD. Built upon the success of the inaugural event in 2022, the program features three full days of more than 130 quilts, a series of workshops by well-known instructors Mary Anne Fontana of FontanaOriginals.com, and Michelle Umlauf, a certified Sulky instructor, appraisals, a boutique, vendor marketplace, concessions and more. More than $5,000 in prizes will be awarded to quilters in a variety of categories.

In addition to the stunning display of quilts and opportunities for learning, the program is partnering this year with Quilts of Valor Foundation, who awards hand-made quilts to U.S. servicemen. A special display of Quilts of Valor quilts will be shown during the exhibition with five being awarded in person.

Jurying is an important part of the competitive process and provides entrants with written feedback and recommendations to improve their work. This year’s jurors include Stacy Koehler, former President of the National Association of Certified Quilt Judges, and Linda McCuean, a professional longarm teacher, quilter, lecturer and a Certfied Quilt Judge with the National Quilting Association.

The show will be open 8:30AM-5:00PM on Friday and Saturday, and 9:30AM-3:00PM on Sunday.  Tickets are available by advance purchase or at the door. Single day tickets are $9.00. Weekend passes are $25.00 and provide access to all three days. Children 5 and under enter free.

“The Allegany Arts Council is thrilled to once again be able to offer this event,” said Allegany Arts Council Executive Director Julie Westendorff. “Our goal is to expand the show into a nationally-ranked competition and tourist attraction. As an organization which strives to support artists and contribute to economic development through the arts, the Arts Council is proud to honor quilters practicing this traditional art form and enthusiastic about encouraging a new generation of artists to learn the practice.”

The 2024 Schoolhouse Quilt Show & Competition will also welcome Dawn Heefner, American Quilters Society Certified Quilt Appraiser, on Friday and Saturday, June 21 & 22, for appraisal appointments. Appointments are a half hour and cost $45.00 each.
