Art=Communication. It influences communities by changing opinions, instilling values and translating experiences, allowing those from differing perspectives to communicate with one another through images, sounds, stories, word, dance and song. Art unifies us; when we can visualize or feel the experiences of others, it opens our eyes to a larger world, and it paves the way for exploration of topics which can often be uncomfortable or sensitive, ultimately leading to healing and wholeness.
The Allegany Arts Council is pleased to announce a call to artists on the theme of “Creative Community Creating Unity.” The purpose of the exhibition is to invite artists of all skill levels to explore issues of equity, diversity, inclusion, affirmation, justice, and access, focusing attention on the ways in which art addresses these important issues impacting our world.
*This exhibition explores subjects which may illuminate, challenge, unsettle, or cause viewers to have strong emotional reactions. To exhibit a work of art is not to endorse the work or the vision, ideas, and opinions of the artist. It is to uphold the right of all to experience diverse visions and views. If and when controversies arise from the exhibition of a work of art, we welcome public discussion and debate with the belief that such discussion is integral to the experience of the art. Consistent with our commitment to freedom of speech, we will not censor or refuse works unless they demonstrate a clear violation of the exhibition guidelines, goals and objectives.
The exhibition will take place in the Allegany Arts Council’s Schwab Gallery from July 31-August 28, 2021, with a Public Opening to take place Saturday, August 14, 2021, from 6:00PM-8:00PM. The exhibition is free and open to the public and all are invited to attend.
Under the Allegany Arts Council’s Wellness Committee, we are pleased to acknowledge partners from Allegany College of Maryland, Frostburg State University, Allegany County NAACP #7007, and the Community Resilience Council.
Artists are invited to submit works which address issues of equity, diversity, inclusion, affirmation, justice, and access in all aspects of life. The exhibition will not be juried and no prizes will be awarded. There is no fee to enter. The deadline to enter is Friday, July 9, 2021.
Works may include visual arts, poetry or prose, installation, video/film/original music, dance or theater performance. The gallery will work with artists to ensure any artist wishing to participate may do so. Works may not exceed 36” in width. Works do not need to be professionally presented, or include matting, framing or wiring. The gallery will utilize several methods to present artwork, including nails, hooks, museum putty, and pedestals. Depending upon the number of works received, the gallery may salon-stack works to include as many as possible.
It is not a requirement that works be for sale, but artists are permitted to provide a sales price. The gallery commission is 35% for any sold works and proceeds from the event will benefit a scholarship fund.
Artists should include an artist statement with their entry and statements will be included in the exhibition materials. Statements should be written in third person.
