The Allegany Arts Council is pleased to partner with Frostburg State University's Cultural Event Series to host the Tibetan monks of the Drepung Loseling Monastery for a week of contemplation, compassion and the art of mandala-making.
What is the Mystical Arts of Tibet?
For the past 30 years, the Mystical Arts of Tibet tours by the monks of Drepung Loseling Monastery have crossed the globe to offer the authentic, sacred Tibetan arts to enchanted audiences in major cities and smaller communities alike. Endorsed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, these events are part of a tradition that dates back 2,500 years. Many consider observation of these rituals to be a transformative experience in their lives.
What is the schedule?
During their time in our community, the Tibetan monks will participate in a variety of activities open to the public including mandala-making, lectures and other rituals and ceremonies All events will take place at the Cumberland Masonic Temple, located at 15 Greene Street in Cumberland. All events are free and open to the public.

Why Mandala-Making?
The Tibetan monks utilize the process of creating a circular, symmetrical design as a tool for meditation, self-reflection and achieving a state of inner peace and focus, often drawing upon spiritual symbolism to represent the interconnectedness of the universe and the individual.
In essence, mandala-making and other similar exercises offer a way to connect with one's inner self through artistic expression while engaging in a mindful activity.
