Artist Bio: Michael Hunter Thompson is a fine art photographer, graphic designer, and community development professional based in Western Maryland. A graduate of Allegany High School and Frostburg State University with a BA in Graphic Design, his signature visual style utilizes meticulous staging and cinematic lighting captured at dusk or nightfall. In addition to his creative practice, he provides specialized fine art reproduction and archival giclée printing services for regional artists.
Deeply embedded in Mountain Maryland’s civic and cultural ecosystems, Michael has dedicated over a decade to regional arts leadership. He is the Co-Founder and Past Chair of the Allegany National Photography Competition & Exhibition (ANPCE) and a past Board Member and Grant Reviewer for the Allegany Arts Council.
His creative work has achieved extensive local, state, and national acclaim. He is a two-time recipient of the Maryland State Arts Council Independent Artist Award and was honored with the Maryland Historical Trust Preservation Award for Excellence in Community Engagement. This prestigious recognition, alongside a Governor’s Citation and Congressional Recognition, celebrated his multi-year community heritage project, Fade to Blue: A Tribute to Allegany’s Campobello. The initiative engaged over 500 participants across five generations, culminating in a self-published hardcover oral history book and large-scale public installations that drove significant regional cultural tourism and downtown placemaking.
