A Community
alive with the arts

Mission, Vision & History

of the Allegany Arts Council

The Allegany Arts Council is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting awareness of and access to the arts in Allegany County, Maryland. We have served as one of 24 County arts agencies in the state since 1975.

As a non-profit organization, we are eligible to receive tax-deductible donations and grant funding, which comprise a significant part of our annual operating budget. We also generate funding from entry fees, workshops, and an annual membership program.

Our Mission

A community where the arts are a part of everything.

Our Vision

The Allegany Arts Council supports the arts to improve all aspects of life in Allegany County.

The Allegany Arts Council creates a strategic plan which defines and directs our mission-oriented work.

Our strategic goals include:

  • Promote awareness, appreciation, and engagement in the arts for everyone
  • Support local artists and arts organizations
  • Sustain our operations
  • Contribute to community health and well-being through collaborative partnerships
  • Impact economic development through the arts
  • Attract and welcome new people to live, work and play in Allegany County

A New Chapter

at 123 Baltimore Street

In 2024, the Allegany Arts Council took a major step and purchased an underutilized property located in the heart of downtown Cumberland and within the borders of the city's Arts & Entertainment District.  After nearly 15 years at 9 N. Centre Street, we are excitedly entering a new chapter.

Like many buildings across rural communities, our future home is in need of extensive renovation, but will ultimately feature an art gallery and exhibition space, multi-purpose areas for collaboration and creativity, and will share access with another local non-profit organization, Loft 129, whose 100-seat music venue will create a one-stop shop for the arts on Cumberland's famed Baltimore Street.

Our future home will also offer more than 7000 square feet of space, and will join recent investors and developers eager to join the renaissance taking place in our community.

While the renovations are underway, our staff and administrative offices can be found at 42 N. Centre Street, where we will remain through the end of 2024.
