7th Annual Allegany National Photography Competition & Exhibition opens April 3

CUMBERLAND, MD—The 7th Annual Allegany National Photography Competition & Exhibition (ANPCE) will take place this year from April 3-24. The show will be available for viewing both in person at the Allegany Arts Council’s galleries at 9 N. Centre Street in Cumberland, and via digital gallery at  https://www.alleganyartscouncil.org/saville-exhibition/.

Established in 2015, ANPCE began as a way to showcase photography talent in the region, but quickly grew into a nationally-recognized show, this year garnering more than 800 entries from 41 states. The show offers a diverse and wide-ranging look at the world of photography, including street photography, portraiture, landscape and still life, fine art and many other styles and techniques. In 2020, the show’s top prize was awarded to local photographer, Doug Schwab, and this year, two Arts Council members, Martin Heavner and Michael Hunter Thompson, were juried into the show, along with Frostburg residents Jamie McGreevy and Janelle Mulétz.

All are invited to a live, virtual awards presentation on Saturday, April 10, from 6:00-7:30PM. The program will feature our 2021 juror, Karen Irvine, chief curator & deputy director of the Museum of Contemporary Photography at Columbia College in Chicago. The streaming event can be found via Facebook Live as well as our YouTube channel, both @AlleganyArtsCouncil. The event is free and open to the public.

Then, on Saturday, April 17, take a deeper dive into this year’s competition with Frostburg State University Associate Professor of Art, Robert Hein. This Zoom event, entitled Behind the Screen, will take place from 5:30-6:30PM and will explore technique, style, and more. The event is free but registration is required. To register, email art@alleganyarts.org or call 301.777.2787.
