2022 Schoolhouse Quilt Show comes to Allegany County Fairgrounds June 3-5

CUMBERLAND— The Allegany Arts Council and Schoolhouse Quilters Guild, Inc. will host the first-ever 2022 Schoolhouse Quilt Show & Competition to take place June 3-5, 2022, at the Allegany County Fairgrounds in Cumberland, Maryland. The event will feature three full days of quilt exhibition, programs and workshops, a quilt boutique, vendors, and much more. More than $5000 in prizes will be awarded to traditional and modern quilters in a variety of categories.
The show will be open 8:30AM-6:00PM on Friday and Saturday, and 9:30AM-4:00PM on Sunday. Tickets are available by advance purchase or at the door. Single day tickets are $8.00. Weekend passes are $20.00 and provide access to all three days. Children 5 and under enter free.
“The Allegany Arts Council is very pleased to be partnering with the Schoolhouse Quilters Guild on this event,” said Allegany Arts Council Executive Director Julie Westendorff. “Our goal is to expand the long-running show into a nationally-ranked competition and tourist attraction. As an organization which strives to support artists and contribute to economic development through the arts, the Arts Council is proud to honor quilters practicing this traditional art form and enthusiastic about encouraging a new generation of artists to learn the practice.”
A variety of workshops will be offered throughout the show—everything from paper-piecing with 2022 Juror, Priscilla Godfrey, to art quilting, to kids' workshops, to a chance to contribute a panel to the COVID-19 HOPE Quilt that will be traveling around the nation to honor frontline workers and loved ones lost to COVID.
The COVID-19 HOPE Quilt Exhibit and Installation, a project created by artist and philanthropist Diane Canney, will be on display throughout the show. Visitors can spend a few minutes taking photos or learning more about those featured in the display, and may participate Saturday evening, June 4, in a special commemoration beginning at 6:15PM on the front lawn of the Fairgrounds’ Multipurpose Building. The WMHS Foundation and Western Maryland Health System Auxiliary will be lighting luminaries which will remain on during darkness throughout the competition.
The 2022 Schoolhouse Quilt Show & Competition will also welcome Dawn Heefner, American Quilters Society Certified Quilt Appraiser, on Friday and Saturday, June 3 & 4, for appraisal appointments. Appointments are a half hour and cost $45.00 each.
