9th Annual Allegany National Photography Competition & Exhibition opens April 1

CUMBERLAND, MD—The 9th Annual Allegany National Photography Competition & Exhibition (ANPCE) will take place this year from April 1-22. The public is invited to an opening reception and awards ceremony on Saturday, April 1, from 6:00-8:00PM. The program will feature 2023 juror, Todd J. Tubutis, Director of the Art Museum of West Virginia University.
Established in 2015, ANPCE began as a way to showcase photography talent in the region, but quickly grew into a nationally-recognized show, this year garnering more than 800 entries from across the country. The show offers a diverse and wide-ranging look at the world of photography, including street photography, portraiture, landscape and still life, fine art and many other styles and techniques. This year, four Arts Council members, Chayo de Chevez, Michael Hunter Thompson, Sandra Chen Weinstein, and Beamie Young, were among the 56 photographers juried into the show.
In addition to the opening reception, the Arts Council will host a Juror’s Talk by Tubutis on Friday, March 31, from 6:00PM-7:30PM. Entitled Building a Museum Photography Collection: Where to Begin?, the talk will provide insight from a curator's perspective. The event is free and open to the public, and will begin with a cocktail reception.
Photo Show programming will continue on Saturday, April 15, from 4:00-5:30PM, when Frostburg State University professor Robert Hein invites attendees to take a deep dive into the photography exhibit, pointing out themes and techniques and speaking directly with artists and viewers about the show. This event is free and open to the public.
The photo show will be available for viewing both in person at the Allegany Arts Council’s galleries at 9 N. Centre Street in Cumberland, and via digital gallery at https://www.alleganyartscouncil.org/saville-exhibition/. For more information, visit www.alleganyartscouncil.org or call 301-777-2787.
