Allegany Arts Council Announces Winners of the 12th Mountain Maryland Plein Air Competition

 

CUMBERLAND, MD—The Allegany Arts Council held its 12th Mountain Maryland Plein Air Competition & Exhibition June 12-17, 2023. The event brought 30 artists from throughout the United States and Canada to Western Maryland for a week of outdoor painting.

Renowned Plein Air painter Charlie Hunter served as juror for the competition. The following artists took home awards at the Plein Air Reveal Event held Friday, June 16, at the Ali Ghan Shrine Club.

Best in Show: Mary Ellen Goetz—Wynnewood, PA
First Place: Bridger Barksdale – Orem, UT
Second Place: Richie Vios – Austin, TX
Third Place: Thomas Bucci—Camden, ME
Juror’s Choice of Merit: Durre Waseem—Corona, CA
Best Use of Light: Lon Brauer—Granite City, IL
Best Architectural: Richard Sneary—Kansas City, MO
Artists’ Choice: Natalia Andreeva—Tallahassee, FL, and Lon Brauer—Granite City, IL

The Plein Air Quick Draw event took place on Saturday, June 17, bringing community members, students, and 2023 juried artists together for a two-hour, timed competition. Quick Draw winners for the juried artist competition were First Place: Russell Jewell, Easley, SC; Second Place: Jeff Williams, Stillwater, OK; and Third Place: Lauren Carlo, Baltimore, MD. Kevin Kutz and Patricia Wilt were named winners of the community competition and Berkeley Leasure was the winner of the student competition.
