The Mountain Traditions Project Exhibition is on display at the Allegany Arts Council

CUMBERLAND—The Mountain Traditions Project Exhibition is now on display at the Allegany Arts Council. This limited exhibition will run through June 13, 2021, with a Panel Presentation & Public Opening to take place Saturday, June 5, 2021, from 5:00PM-8:00PM.

Through a series of photographic portraits, the Mountain Traditions Project tells the stories of individuals carrying forward Appalachian traditions in our rapidly changing world, explores culture as a dynamic force, and challenges long-held notions of cultural rigidity in Appalachia. In addition to in-person viewing, the exhibition is available for viewing on our digital gallery at https://www.alleganyartscouncil.org/saville-exhibition/.

As part of the Mountain Traditions Project, students mentored by Michael Snyder created videos showcasing many of the tradition bearers included in the photographs. One of these videos will be playing in the Schwab Gallery during each day of the exhibition.

The Mountain Traditions Project was funded with generous support from Community Trust Foundation, and was created in partnership with The Frostburg State University Foundation, The Appalachian Independent, Mountain City Traditional Arts, West Virginia Public Radio, The Maryland Traditions Program, Maryland State Arts Council, Allegany Arts Council, Frostburg State University, and Interdependent Pictures.
