The Allegany Arts Council maintains two professional art galleries which host artists from our local community, the region and beyond.
The Saville Gallery features soaring ceilings, plenty of natural light, and historic hardwood floors along with a tin ceiling, creating a perfectly clean canvas for artworks of all sizes and mediums. Exhibitions typically occur every three to four weeks and usually host a live Public Opening for the exhibiting artist(s) and the public. View all upcoming exhibitions.
Throughout the year, several signature events take place in the gallery, including the Allegany National Photography Competition & Exhibition, the Mountain Maryland Plein Air Competition & Exhibition, and the Wills Creek Exhibition of Fine Art.
In 2020, with the introduction of COVID-19 to our national landscape, the Saville Gallery began development of online, digital galleries which allow us to expand our reach beyond Western Maryland and the surrounding areas. Artworks are for sale and may be purchased nationwide.
The Saville Gallery operates year-round, and offers an eclectic range of artworks in solo exhibitions, group shows, and themed features, and includes both two and three-dimensional works, installations and functional art.
The Mountain Maryland Schwab Gallery is our more intimate gallery space, which often features exhibitions showcasing emerging artists, themed shows, student artwork, and arts education and programming.
Unlike its counterpart, the Schwab Gallery also boasts a small stage, professional stage lighting, and a smaller setting perfect for musical performance, theatre or private events. The Schwab Gallery hosts a number of community groups who offer yoga, life drawing, and art critique programs to artists and community members, many free of charge.
The Allegany Arts Council Exhibition Committee serves as a review panel for all incoming exhibition applications. The committee, comprised of Arts Council members, artists and arts champions, meets quarterly to review applications for artistic merit, and considers the galleries’ complete annual schedule, carefully curating a wide range of mediums and styles throughout the year. Exhibition applications are accepted year-round and will be reviewed in the order they are received. Throughout the year, the Allegany Arts Council galleries host a variety of national, juried competitions. Entries are accepted through CAFÉ.
Occasionally, the Arts Council will host a local competition which does not utilize an online entry system. More information is provided in our Events Calendar or subscribe to our newsletter, ArtsFlash, for the most up-to-date information.
