One Block Illusion Quilt
Time: 10:00AM-4:00PM (6 hours)
Instructor: Mary Anne Fontana, Fontana Originals
Mary Anne Fontana is a self-taught sewer, quilter and textile artist who began sewing at the age of eight. As an award-winning quilter, designer and author she manages FontanaOriginals.com to share her inspiration.
Mary Anne is an AccuQuilt® Expert & Educator as well as a pattern writer/quilt designer for AQS, QOV®, AccuQuilt® and Fontana Originals. She also has a shop on Etsy where she sells patters and quilts.
Much of Mary Anne’s work is inspired by her love of photography, where she prints wholecloth images from her photos which she uses to create free-motion quilts. Most of her images are collected while on vacation.
Many of her patterns also include “how to” YouTube links which are full of time-saving tips and advice for learners. In her spare time, Mary Anne also embroiders faces on dolls for The Giving Doll Project, or lends her longarm skills to her local Quilts of Valor® groups.
Description: Have you ever wanted to make a vibrant, colorful, Illusion-style quilt? If so, this is your chance! This 6-hour workshop will show you how color and rotation play a key role in the overall look of your quilt. Once you have taken this class you will have the confidence to go home and play! Experiment with different layouts, rotate blocks just to see how it changes the “look,” and create
quilts you never knew you could!
Sewing Kits: Fabric needed to make this quilt will be pre-cut and kitted allowing participants to go right to sewing and design. All blocks will be sewn together exactly the same way - only the colors will change. Once your blocks are complete, you choose the layout. There are six different layout options to choose from during this class.
Kits include:
- Printed pattern with complete instructions to piece this design
- Six different layout options using all the same color & quantity blocks
- Pre-cut fabric for entire quilt top in solids
Batting and binding will need to be added on own.
Registrants are required to bring the following:
- Scissors
- Thread
- Machine Needle
- Seam Ripper
- Straight Pins
- Other standard sewing supplies

Crossbody Bag
Time: 9:00AM-12:00PM (3 hours)

Description: The crossbody bag is a popular style and now you can make one to go with every outfit! This workshop will teach the basic construction of a fully-lined bag, featuring a zipper top, two outside pockets and a shoulder strap.
Once you learn how easy it is to make this crossbody you will be able to apply these skills to making a variety of other bags or zippered projects.
Sewing Kits: Kits are provided as part of the registration fee and include a detailed pattern and template for this bag shape.
Registrants are required to bring the following:
- 1-20'x20' Jacquard or other "upholstery" weight fabric swatch pre-fused with fusible interfacing to give it body. OR - 1 quilted fat quarter sandwich with two fat quarters plus batting quilted
- 1/3 yard lightweight fabric for lining and shoulder strap
- 1 zipper - 7" or longer (will be cut to size in class)
- Heavy duty thread and needle (i.e., Denim needle)
- Walking foot recommended
- Standard sewing supplies including scissors, thread, seam ripper, pins, etc.

Color Changes Everything
Time: 2:00PM-3:00PM (1 hour lecture)

Description: The impact of color in a quilt cannot be overstated! Every time a color is changed, added or removed, the design of a quilt changes, too. This lecture will discuss the impact color selection has on the look and "vibe" of your quilt.
This visual journey will feature quilt images that demonstrate the impact color choice has on our work. We will explore how the same quilt in differing colors can entirely change the viewer's experience.
If a picture is worth a thousand words, there is are almost limitless design possibilities that color offers.
Fee: This lecture is free with day of admission price.

A “Whatever” Corded Build A Box
Time: 1:00PM-5:00PM (4 hours)
Instructor: Michelle Umlauf, Sulky National Educator
Michelle Umlauf has made a career for herself in the sewing industry working as an independent educator. She loves to share her passion with others and enjoys sharing her knowledge with everyone she meets. Michelle joined the Maryland Chapter of the American Sewing Guild when she began sewing in 2007. When she and her husband moved to a remote area of Maryland, she was inspired to start Cyber Stitchers, an online Neighborhood Group, to connect with her ASG friends. She later served one year as the Maryland Chapter President.
Her professional sewing career began with a Martha Pullen licensing. That's where she met Ellen Osten and discovered Sulky's Teacher Certification program. In 2014, Michelle became a National Educator representing Sulky of America, and in 2015, she implemented the Sulky webinar program. Today she continues to work with Sulky as a National Educator and is a Certified Teacher for Pam Damour - the Decorating Diva. Michelle is also a Demonstrator for Clover and was previously a Baby Lock Educator.
Description: Participants will create the versatile "build-a-box" project. Techniques learned will include cording, print embellishment, and stabilizer use. In addition to the corded box, skills learned can be used to make placemats, mousepads, coasters and more!
Sewing Kits: Kits will be provided as part of the registration price which contain many of the necessary materials for the workshop.

Curved Piecing Made Easy

Description: Take the fear out of machine-piecing curves! This workshop will demonstrate how to tackle even the tightest curves and without pinning! To speed up the process we will press all our seams in one direction; no time-consuming pressing seams open. If you have a need for speed, this is the fastest method you will find that will achieve great results every time!
In this workshop, you will learn how to piece various curved blocks, including:
- Drunkard's Path
- Flowering Snowball
- Glorified Nine Patch
- Apple Core
Sewing Kits: A fabric kit which includes pre-cut pieces for all blocks in this class is included as part of the registration fee.
Kits include:
- Printed pattern with complete instructions to piece this design
- Six different layout options using all the same color & quantity blocks
- Pre-cut fabric for entire quilt top in solids

Quilt Show Appraisals
The 2024 Schoolhouse Quilt Show & Competition is pleased to welcome Dawn Heefner, American Quilters Society Certified Quilt Appraiser, who will join us on Friday and Saturday, June 21 and 22 for appraisal appointments.
Heefner has been an AQS-Certified appraiser since 2003, practicing in the Pennsylvania-South Jersey-Delaware-Maryland area. Her work covers newly made quilts as well as antiques.
She is a member of PAAQT, the Professional Association of Appraisers of Quilted Textiles, and adheres to Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP).
Dawn has participated in quilt documentations in Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland, and has co-authored several of the resulting books.
She has been active in the American Quilt Study Group, and has studied textiles and quilts on both sides of the Atlantic.
